The previous editions took place in Berlin (2008), Amsterdam (2011), Oslo (2014) and Montreal (2017). The aim of this specialised conference is to give symphony orchestra or opera musicians down to the smallest ensemble orchestras the opportunity to share their experiences, concerns and initiatives on issues such as improving working conditions, consolidating employment, risk prevention where health and safety are concerned, developing audiences or public or private financial perpetuation. A place of exchange for musicians and managers Since its first edition in 2008, the IOC has invited administrators to take part in panels alongside musicians’ representatives. This open approach enables us to address issues of common interest together, without excluding controversy. Financing methods, the impact of digital on the way orchestras operate and their relationship with the public, taking risks into account where occupational health is concerned, the involvement of musicians in elaborating artistic projects – these are but a few examples of the numerous issues which musicians and managers address. We need to take up issues and submit them for debate. Orchestras: an essential cultural mission In February 2014, musicians’ representatives meeting at the 3 rd IOC stated:Support for symphony and opera music, which are a precious and fragile part of our cultural heritage, is a prime responsibility of national, regional and local governments . In what has become known as the Oslo Call , they also called on political decision makersto honour this responsibility, by providing orchestras with the means that are necessary to pursue their missions and thus contribute to, and enhance artistic, social and economic life . This public service mission for orchestras reaffirmed here fulfils our societies’ need for culture, providing them with both artistic excellence and social bonding. Contact us if you are an orchestra manager, a journalist, an academic or an exhibitor Registration Message from John Smith, FIM President The 2024 FIM International Orchestras Conference (IOC) in Malmö will be the 5 th FIM IOC. The inaugural conference was held in Berlin in 2008; since then, three other conferences have been held in Amsterdam, Oslo and Montreal. The Montreal IOC took place in May 2017 pre the Covid pandemic and plans to hold the next conference were, along with many other planned events, put on hold. Therefore, we are delighted that we are able to resume this very important and successful series of exchanges of information to share best practices and visions for the future. The IOC is a unique event that puts the musician at the centre of discussions on the development, and future place, of the orchestra within society. They have been liberating events inasmuch as it is the musicians themselves who make the major contributions to the conference and formulate the direction that FIM and its affiliates will take over the next few years. I know that the fifth conference in the beautiful city of Malmö will build on the success of the previous ones and have a lasting influence on the attitudes and future strategies adopted by orchestral musicians and their representative unions. The world appears to be a different place after the pandemic and the position of orchestras in many countries is extremely insecure as state funding and private sponsorship has been hard to come by. How will orchestras and musicians have to adapt in order to ensure survival? How can jobs in orchestras be made more secure? How can unions and managements work together to provide a safe, fair, equal and caring environment for all orchestral musicians, both full-time and freelance? These are just a few of the broad questions and challenges that the IOC will address. We welcome the participation of a number of representatives of orchestra management from around the world and hope that we can address the challenges facing the orchestra sector in an open and collaborative way. The conclusions of the 2017 Montreal IOC highlighted the public value of orchestras, emphasised that good governance with full involvement of the musicians was an essential to the success and artistic excellence of orchestras. Stated the orchestra workplace must be free from bullying and harassment. It was agreed that the gradual substitution of traditional broadcast media with new forms of online music distribution, in particular streaming services, will not generate fair revenues to performers unless the exclusive right of making available is adjusted to allow a new form of remuneration similar to the right currently enjoyed for the broadcast of recordings. Emphasised that permanent employment was key to building and maintaining the long-term stability and high artistic quality of orchestras, and international solidarity campaigns were an essential tool to address these challenges. Finally, the representatives of orchestra musicians assembled in Montreal for the 4th IOC reaffirmed the importance of democratic values and human rights to resist the critical threat that populism pose to peace, access to culture and freedom of expression in several countries. I am confident that the representatives of orchestras from around the world will depart Malmö feeling inspired, invigorated and ready for the struggles that the orchestral sector will inevitably face in coming years. I take this opportunity to thank the organisers and members of the SMF and SYMF, our host unions and UNISONO from Germany and the Nordic Musicians’ Unions for their generous support for this important conference. In closing on behalf of FIM, its Presidium and Executive Committee, I send fraternal best wishes to all orchestra musicians throughout the world.
